Safety & Community Guidelines

Trading safely istrading well.

TradeTree is built on trust between people. These guidelines exist to protect that trust — and to make sure everyone in our community has a good experience, every time.

In-person safety Online safety What's allowed Enforcement Report a problem
In-Person Safety
Meeting someone for the first time? Do it right.
Most TradeTree trades are wonderful. But meeting a stranger in person always deserves care. These habits protect you — and they signal to the other trader that you're thoughtful and trustworthy.
The golden rule of in-person tradesIf your gut says something feels off — trust it. You are never obligated to complete a trade you're uncomfortable with. A good trader will understand.
🏪

Meet in public first

For your first exchange with someone, choose a public place — a coffee shop, library, or busy park. Avoid going to a stranger's home until you've met in person at least once.

👥

Bring a friend

You don't need to explain why. Bringing a friend to a first meeting is completely normal and any reasonable trader will respect it — even expect it.

📍

Tell someone where you're going

Let a friend or family member know where you're meeting, who you're meeting, and when you expect to be back. Share a location pin if you can.

📱

Keep your phone charged

Have your phone charged and accessible. Know how to quickly share your location with a trusted contact if something feels wrong.

🔍

Check their profile first

Before meeting, look at their trade history, rating, and reviews. A trader with 20+ positive reviews and a verified ID badge is far lower risk than someone with none.

🌙

Avoid late night meetups

Schedule in-person exchanges during daylight hours, especially for your first meeting with a new trader. Daytime public meetups are safer for everyone.

⚠️
For high-value item exchangesIf you're trading something worth a lot — a piece of furniture, expensive equipment, or multiple sessions of a skill — consider meeting for a brief introduction first before the exchange itself. A five-minute coffee can tell you a lot about a person.
Online Safety
Protect yourself before you meet.
Most scams and uncomfortable situations on platforms like TradeTree start online, not in person. These habits keep you safe before you ever meet anyone.
  • 💬
Keep communication on TradeTree Don't move conversations to text, WhatsApp, or email until you're comfortable. Our messaging system gives you a record of everything and gives us the ability to help if something goes wrong.
  • 🔒
Never share personal contact information too early Your phone number, home address, and email are yours to share when you're ready — not before. A good trader won't pressure you for them upfront.
  • 💳
No money should ever change hands If someone asks you to pay for something as part of a TradeTree exchange — even a "processing fee," "shipping deposit," or "trust payment" — that is a scam. Report it immediately. TradeTree is barter only.
  • 🔗
Don't click links from other traders Scammers sometimes send links claiming to show more photos, a payment portal, or their "portfolio." Legitimate traders don't need you to click external links to complete a trade.
  • 📸
Request more photos if something seems off If a listing has only one stock-looking photo, ask for more. Legitimate traders are happy to send additional photos. Scammers usually can't.
  • 🆔
Prioritize verified traders Look for the ID Verified badge on profiles. Verified traders have confirmed their identity with TradeTree. It's not a guarantee of a good trade, but it significantly reduces risk.
  • ⏱️
Be wary of excessive urgency "I need to do this trade today or the offer disappears" is a pressure tactic, not a real constraint. Good trades happen at a pace both people are comfortable with.
🚨
If you suspect a scamStop communicating immediately, don't complete the trade, and report the account using the flag button on their profile. Our safety team reviews all reports within 24 hours.
Building Trust
How trust works on TradeTree.
TradeTree's trust system is built on reviews, verification, and trade history. Here's how it works — and how to build your own reputation as a trusted trader.
  • Always leave a review after a trade Reviews are the lifeblood of trust on TradeTree. Even a brief, honest review helps the next person decide whether to trade with someone. We ask both parties to review every completed trade.
  • 📋
Be specific in your listings Honest, detailed listings set accurate expectations and attract better proposals. The more honest you are about what you're offering, the smoother your trades will be.
  • 💬
Respond to proposals promptly Even a "thanks but this isn't the right fit" response is better than silence. Responsive traders get more proposals and better reviews.
  • 🤝
Honor your commitments If you agree to a trade, follow through. Backing out without communication is one of the most common complaints on barter platforms and will affect your rating.
  • 🆔
Complete ID verification Verified traders receive significantly more proposals. Verification takes 2 minutes from your profile settings and adds the green checkmark badge that other traders look for.
